2. (39) Jonas Jerebko, PF

The Pistons picked 22-year old power forward Jonas Jerebko with the 39th pick in the NBA Draft. Jerebko played in 56 games in two seasons in Italy and he averaged 6.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He appears to be a project for the Pistons as he likely won’t be able to contribute much as a rookie.

2. (35) DaJuan Summers, SF

The Pistons selected 21-year old small forward DaJuan Summers with the 35th pick of the NBA Draft on Thursday Night. Summers played in 101 games in three seasons at Georgetown and he averaged 11.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Summers will have to battle Austin Daye for minutes this season and that could be a losing battle for him. Still, this was a good pick for the Pistons as Summers does have some game.

1. (15) Austin Daye, F

The Detroit Pistons have selected 21-year old forward Austin Daye with the 15th pick of the NBA Draft last night. Daye is a very skinny guy at 6′11″, 200 pounds and his game closely resembles that of Tayshaun Prince. He is a good defensive player and he can hit the three pointer frequently. Daye played in 67 games in his two years at Gonzaga and he averaged 11.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.9 blocked shots per game. Unless Prince gets traded before the season starts it appears that the Pistons might not have a lot of minutes available for Daye as a rookie.

The Detroit Pistons acquire Fabricio Oberto in three team trade

The Pistons have acquired 34-year old center Fabricio Oberto in return for 22-year old forward Amir Johnson. In this trade the Spurs acquired Richard Jefferson from the Bucks and the Bucks got Bruce Bowen and Kurt Thomas from the Spurs. Oberto played in 54 games (11 starts) for the Spurs last season and he averaged 12.5 minutes, 2.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. He has now played in 274 games (108 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 15.3 minutes, 3.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. It’s hard to believe that the Pistons traded Amir Johnson for a 34-year old backup center. Johnson played in 62 games (24 starts) for the Pistons last season and he averaged 14.7 minutes, 3.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 1.0 blocked shot per game. In four seasons with the Pistons, Johnson has played in 135 games (24 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 13.6 minutes, 3.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 1.1 blocked shots per game. This is a trade that could very well come back to haunt the Pistons down the road.

UPDATE: The Pistons have released Fabricio Oberto.

The Detroit Pistons have some hard decisions to make

The Pistons will have to make some hard decisions with their free agents. Forward Rasheed Wallace is probably the most important player in this category. He played in 66 games (63 starts) for the Pistons last season and he averaged 32.2 minutes, 12.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 blocked shots per game. Wallace is one of the team leaders of the Pistons and he still has some game left so they should consider re-signing him as long as the price doesn’t get too high. Antonio McDyess also had a solid season for the Pistons last year. He played in 62 games (30 starts) for the Pistons last season and he averaged 30.1 minutes, 9.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. McDyess would likely come cheaper than Wallace if that’s the route the Pistons take but they do need to keep one of them. The Pistons have a logjam at guard which will likely lead to Allen Iverson leaving the team. A-I played in 54 games (50 starts) for the Pistons last year and he averaged 36.5 minutes, 17.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Iverson will likely want to go where he would be the focal point of the offense. C/F Kwame Brown will likely exercise his player option for the 2009-2010 season because of two reasons: 1) He’s not that good and 2) The economy. Brown played in 58 games (30 starts) for the Pistons last year and he averaged 17.2 minutes, 4.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.
